From Redundancy to a Dream Role

Redundancy can leave even the most experienced leaders feeling lost and uncertain about the future. In my latest article, I share Sarah’s story and how she went from panic-applying and feeling depleted to landing her dream role in just six weeks. How Sarah Found Her Dream Role in Just Six Weeks

Losing your job after years of commitment can feel like the rug has been pulled from under you. For Sarah, a senior leader who had spent 14years in the same organisation, redundancy brought with it a wave of uncertainty. She felt overwhelmed, exhausted, and stuck in a cycle of job applications that weren’t leading anywhere.

Her instinct was to apply for anything and everything, what she described as “scatter gun approach” Each rejection, or worse, silence, chipped away at her motivation. She knew she needed to work, but she didn’t feel excited by any of the roles she was pursuing.

That’s when she turned to coaching.

Pressing Pause to Find Clarity

In our first sessions together, Sarah and I took a step back. To move from chasing every vacancy, we revisited her values, what truly mattered to her, what she wanted in her next role, and how this aligned with the life and career she wanted to build now and letting go of the only thing she had known for the last 14 years (her previous role).

Through this process, she realised her scattergun approach wasn’t serving her and we worked on creating a clear job application strategy that focused only on roles aligned to her values, purpose and aspirations.

We also used visualisation techniques, helping her picture what her ideal role would look and feel like. This gave her the motivation to keep going and, importantly, the confidence to take a short break from jobhunting, much needed after years of hard work followed by this enforced change.Those weeks off gave her the space to reset, recharge, and return with renewed focus.

From Overwhelm to Opportunity

With her new strategy in place, Sarah became more intentional about her applications. She started securing interviews and with coaching support, prepared for them with confidence.

The results speak for themselves: within just six weeks of starting her coaching journey, Sarah was offered a role that perfectly aligned with her values, it was her dream job.

The Transformation

Sarah’s journey highlights the power of slowing down to move forward. Coaching helped her shift from feeling lost, unmotivated, and overwhelmed, to confident, energised, and clear on what she wanted. By aligning her job search with her values and strengths, she found not just another role, but the right role.
